My name is Kayla, and I am on a journey to become an elementary teacher. There are many things that teachers expect of their students without knowing what it is like to be assigned those tasks. One such task is creative writing. One cannot fully understand the creative writing process without going through it themselves. As I was working on my creative pieces, I encountered a few different hiccups. I had writer's block from the beginning just trying to choose topics to write about and brainstorm general story lines. Once I started writing, I had lots of fun with it! Then came sharing them with my peers...it was so intimidating. I wondered if my ideas were creative, if my prose was awkward, if the stories were boring, if mine would be the worst out of all who would read theirs.
In the future, when I assign my students creative writing pieces, I will understand their dilemmas and doubts, hangups and mental blocks, and the vulnerability and insecurities that are uncovered when presenting your own works to a crowd (no matter how small). On this site, you will find the two pieces I wrote when I put myself in the position of a student learning to write creatively, recordings of me reading those pieces, and links to the works of those who experienced the creative writing process with me.
